Despite the impressive history and the magnificent architecture of Rajasthan, the most lasting experience in the land of kings is meeting the people, whether a weaver, a camel owner, or a holy man. The golden desert landscape contrasts the colorful saris, turbans, the joy and hospitality.
Dance
Legends of bravery and romance are performed through folk music and spectacular dance performances. This tradition is several hundred years old and today, as in the old days, the people of Chandelao are invited to a performance together with us in the fort. The dancers and the musicians belong to the clan that used to entertain the royalty and nobility. At other times it might be acrobats or snake charmers who entertain, or we simply meet for storytelling around the campfire.
Shopping
Rajasthan is a fun place for shopping, both because of the beautiful handicrafts available, and also the interactions at the marketplace. We visit markets where we are as exotic for the locals as the goods there are for us. You can bargain for turbans, jewellery, exotic spices and second hand dentures, or you can simply wander around taking in all the impressions. We will also visit the families of craftsmen who make the traditional shoes, textiles and jewelers.
ReligonsIndia is a center for mystics. It is said that the Hindus have 330 million gods! Everywhere you go you will find a temple, and religious practice is an integral part of daily life. Most of the people of Rajasthan are Hindus, but you will also find Muslims and Jains. Contrary to what we hear about the conflicts between Muslims and Hindus, people of these two religions, in most cases, live peacefully together. You will see this when you visit the Muslim shrine in Ajmer, the holiest pilgrim center for the Muslims in India. In fact, many of the visitors to the shrine of the Sufi-saint Khwaja Moin-ed-din Chisti are Hindus.
