Sailing the Lamu archipelago, snorkeling with turtles and dolphins, visits to WWF turtle research station, Lamu town with its unique Swahili culture, black-veiled women decorated with henna paintings, palm trees and sand dunes – this is a true gem!
Day by day itinerary as follows:
Day 1
Arrive am at Jomo Kenytta International airport, Nairobi. Transfer to Basecamp Travel office for breakfast. Transfer to a domestic airport for a two hour long flight to Kiwayu – in the northern Lamu archipelago. Pick up by jeep, boat transfer to Munira Camp, Kiwayu Island. Check in, walk the soft sandy beach, swim in the warm waves and feel the peace of this remote part of the world.
Dinner & overnight Munira Camp.
Day 2
Early morning swim, breakfast and boat transfer to WWF field station. Make a visit to the Flip Flop Arts & Crafts project, meet the Bajuni women and the project leader, receive a presentation of the project and possibilities to purchase products.
Take a boat trip to either Mongo Sharif, a turtle outpost in the northern archipelago, meet the turtle patrols for a brief talk on turtles or head for other beaches for turtle hatching or nesting activities together with the turtle reasearch team. Picknic lunch on board ( Munira Camp). In the afternoon take a guided underwater snorkeltrip in the Kiwayu bay.
Return to Munira camp before sunset, dinner & overnight Munira camp.

Day 3
Early breakfast, check out Munira camp. Jump on a traditional dhow for a full day sailing south to Shela / Lamu. Follow along the mangrove forests and white pristine beaches. Look for Carmine Bee eaters, Rose terns and African fish eagles.
Lunch on board, snorkel and swim stops on route. The Indian Ocean hosts a number of spectacular and colorful fish like garfish, zebra fish, parrot fish and there is a good chance of spotting dolphins.
Arrive Lamu Island late afternoon, overnight guest house in Shela / Lamu.
Day 4- 6
Spend the days in Shela – a small fishing village south from Lamu town. Stroll around the narrow lanes, the swahili houses with thatched roofs embedded in bougainvilla trees and feel the atmosphere of this piece of paradise. Chill out and relax on Shelas beautiful beach.
Choose among different activities: Stone Town Walk; a guided tour of Lamu stone town – a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, including a visit to Basecamp dhow revival projetc, learn more about traditional dhow constructions; Safari by dhonkey: take a dhonkey ride across the island to the village of Matondoni, sail by dhow back; Yoga: enjoy a revitalizing one hour yoga session at Yoga House.
All activities to be paid direct, not included in programme.
All nights spent in Shela.
Day 6
Check out Shela guest house by lunch, boat transfer to airstrip and Flight from Kiwayu to Lamu and connecting flight to Nairobi.
Special info:
During the sailing, the accomodation on board or on island camps is simple but comfortable and safe. 4-6 hours sailing each day, depending on monsoon and currents. We provide our own captain and crew of the boat, including a cook. All meals and water included and provided for.
Shade and mosquito nets, life jackets on board.
Telephone and access to motorboat if necessary.
Important personal equipment to bring is sun hat, sun glasses and sun lotion, a pair of binoculars, swim & snorkel gear, mosquito repellent.
Reservation for slight changes in programme due to weather, monsoons and religious holidays.
The main nesting and hatching season for turtles is May to September and with fewer nestings between November and March.
